The piqué shirt looks sporty yet neat. Traditionally a casual choice, it is also increasingly common in the business world these days. Thanks to its various positive properties, the material is even good for sports.

What is a piqué shirt? 7 characteristics

The piqué shirt for men is a casual choice that also offers business and sports options. Piqué stands for a specific knitting technique. This creates a fabric with relief, for example in squares, waffles or checks. This knitting technique is also commonly seen on men's poloshirts.

The material combines a number of unique characteristics:

  • Soft
Piqué is relatively soft due to the knitting technique.

  • Breathable
The fabric breathes well, thanks to its airy nature.

  • Shapely
Its shape retention keeps clothes looking good for a long time.

  • Crease-resistant
The knitting technique prevents excessive creasing.

  • Firm
A piqué shirt is sturdy by default.

  • Firm
The technique makes the fabric extra stiff.

  • Thick
The fabric is thicker than with other techniques.

Note: piqué is not the same as jersey. They are both knitting techniques. A piqué shirt creates a thicker and chunkier fabric, while jersey is more fine and light. Moreover, jersey is elastic and has a more informal look. Piqué is not elastic and therefore looks neater.

Tip: come across ‘baby piqué’? It involves a denser structure than the original. This leads to a particularly thin and soft fabric, for example for bedroom and bed linen.

What is a piqué shirt made of?

A piqué shirt can be made of different materials. Originally, it involves the use of cotton, although synthetic fabrics and blends are also available nowadays. Sometimes a little elastane added to cotton makes the fabric more stretchy and flexible. Polyester, for example, can make the fabric stronger.

The origins of piqué date back to the eighteenth century in England. Manufacturers within the Lancashire cotton industry tried to imitate French luxury quilts. The new knitting technique was first called ‘Marcella’ and was later renamed piqué. Since the twentieth century, it has been an important fabric for menswear, such as dress shirts for men.
